[WATERMARK]第一张【凯尔特】carreg lafar - hyn

the musical traditions of wales are preserved through the performances of cardiff-based sextet carreg lafar. with trio bulgarka-like vocalist linda owen-jones leading the way, the group continues to bring a fresh outlook to the music of their homeland. featuring musicians and singers from every region of wales, carreg lafar was formed by flute and whistle player james rourke and hornpipe, bagpipe, whistle, and percussion player antwn owen-hicks in 1993. a native of the west wales town of llanelli, rourke previously performed traditional welsh music as a member of carreg aonair. playing the flute since the age of 15, he trained as an actor and filmmaker. in addition to playing with carreg lafar, he continues to write SCRIPTs for film and television. his first novel, the mayor of aln, was published in 1999.

a self-taught musician, owen-hicks hails from pontllanfraith in the sirhowy valley of southern wales. he trained as an illustrator in london before returning to wales to form curreg lafar. rourke and owen-hicks' interests in traditional welsh music has been passed on to the other bandmembers. rhondda valley-born fiddle, viola, and cello player rhian evan-jones and northern wales-born vocalist linda owen-jones, who married owen-hicks in the mid-'90s, had little experience with traditional musician before joining carreg lafar. linda owen-jones previously trained as an actor, while rhian evan-jones has been playing violin since the age of ten and holds a music degree from cardiff university. she continues to teach music at a secondary school in pontypridd. carreg lafar is rounded out by guitarist simon o'sea and vocalist/songwriter dylan davies. the group's name, which translates literally as "speaking stones," refers to the welsh tradition of "echo stones" or "places of echo." carreg lafar toured north america in late 1997.

[WATERMARK]第二张【凯尔特】Kila_Luna Park

After a brief diversion with their stage soundtrack recording Monkey!, Kila returns to task with another clinic in rhythmic, melodic, original music performed on Irish instruments. Kila excels in heavily layering their instruments with varying dynamics, slowly building to crescendos of orgasmic proportions and tapering off to a gentle conclusion, techniques best exemplified on "Glanfaidh Me" and "Baroki." The surprise track on Luna Park is "Béilín Méala," a beautiful, haunting piece with an underlying 1950s doo wop vibe. Sung in Gaelic and featuring low whistles, fiddle, double bass, and electric guitar, this song alone is worth the price of the album. Yes, it''s out of character for this band, but its simplistic allure is intoxicating. Also veering from their expected instrumental and vocal tendencies is the gentle a cappella piece "Maith Dhom." But given Kila''s full range of emotions and dynamics, this track serves as a reminder of the band''s scope. In the realm of contemporary Irish music, Luna Park is a sheer masterpiece.

[WATERMARK]第四张【凯尔特】Kila - mind the gap

Artist  Kila
Album Title  Mind the Gap
Date of Release  1995
AMG Rating   ★★★★
Genre  Celtic
Styles  Worldbeat, Celtic Pop, Celtic Rock
Time  57:00
It took three years, but this is the follow-up to Kila's 1992 debut, Handel's Fantasy. While that album incorporated a traditionally based style of playing, this release implements more modern techniques. With more prominent use of electric guitar and world rhythms, Mind the Gap is the logical extension of "Four Ages of Man" from their previous record, a song whose style foretold of changes to come. "F閍ch" is a rhythm and chanting piece from percussionist Ronan O'Snodaigh, followed by "Finnegan," a haunting fiddle piece by Dee Armstrong which segues nicely into the instrumental Celtic rocker "Odlums' Wild Oats," which features Colm O'Snodaigh on flute and an underlying Eno-esque guitar line from Eoin O'Brien. "Tatiana" is a bluesy acoustic number performed on traditional Irish instruments, save for the electric bass, and "5:30" begins like a hard-rocking mid-'70s Steeleye Span or Horslips, only to be interposed by some quirky brass in the final minute, creating an unconventional yet cool conclusion to the tune. Largely instrumental, Kila keeps this album interesting with a wide variety of instruments (uilleann pipes, fiddles, whistles, percussion) coupled with creative arrangements. "Ezekiel" is an up-tempo worldbeat number featuring a funky bass from Ed Kelly and impressive interplay between flutist O'Snodaigh and low whistler Rossa O'Snodaigh. The album concludes with another rocking piece, "Islandbridge," which oddly includes no electric guitar or conventional drums; the instrumental punch is provided by the Irish pipes, acoustic guitar, and fiddle, proving that Celtic rock can emanate from virtually all acoustic instruments. — Dave Sleger

[WATERMARK]第六张【凯尔特】Sharon Shannon & Friends - 2003 Libertango

Artist Sharon Shannon
Album Libertango

Release Date Sep 14, 2004
Label Compass
Genre Celtic
Styles  Contemporary Celtic Celtic Rock Celtic Folk
Part of Sharon Shannon's appeal — besides her huge ability on both accordion and fiddle — is her willingness to ignore musical boundaries and color outside the liens, as she's shown on previous albums. With Libertango she does that, but this time the results aren't as successful as they've been in the past. The opener, "The Whitestrand Sling," mixes her playing with a Latin brass section in a combination that works surprisingly well, then she goes and ruins the moment with a dour take on the Fleetwood Mac chestnut "Albatross" that never makes it off the ground. Sinéad O'Connor sings on a couple of cuts, and a vocal from the late Kirsty MacColl graces a superb version of Astor Piazzolla's title cut (which originally saw the light of day in 1996). Perhaps the strangest, and certainly most intriguing, cut is "An Phailistin" featuring Roisin Elsafty, a Gaelic language piece about the suffering of the Palestinians. Heartfelt as it is, the happy instrumental accompaniment is strikingly at odds with the subject. Then the closer, "What You Make It (Dad Da Da Da)" brings in rapper Marvel; nice idea, and it works better than it should. So, ultimately, a hit-and-miss grab bag from Shannon. But she can never be accused of complacency, and for every experiment that doesn't work, there's one that does.

[WATERMARK]第七张【凯尔特】Talitha MacKenzie - 1995 Spiorad (Spirit)

Talitha MacKenzie's second solo album, Spiorad, is an invigorating update of traditional Celtic, Gaelic and Eastern European music. MacKenzie bases her songs on traditional folk melodies, sending ancient music into uncharted territory by performing them with the immediacy of pop and the freewheeling eclecticism of the best jazz. It's a wonderful result that reveals rich, hidden layers upon each repeated listen.
